Inspired by George Mason’s appeal to individual rights and freedom, George Mason
University (Mason) recognizes that freedom and learning exist within a complementary
relationship. Students are empowered through education, allowing them to achieve
the potential prosperities of freedom. Mason hopes to position its students for even
greater success by offering an international education in Songdo.
The Mason Korea campus is strategically located 25 miles from Seoul and a 20-
minute shuttle ride from Korea’s award-winning international airport. The campus
accommodates 2,000 students and includes world-class teaching facilities, a
library with state-of-the-art technology, a performing arts center, and comfortable
dormitories, faculty apartments, and guest housing.
Programs for March 2014 include Management and Economics, and future proposed
programs include Conflict Analysis and Resolution, Global Affairs, Computer Game
Design, and more. Other universities operating at Songdo Global University Campus
include SUNY Korea, Ghent University, and University of Utah, and neighboring Korean
universities include Yonsei University and Incheon University.
Mason Korea students originate from throughout East and Southeast Asia and beyond,
and Mason’s Virginia students will also find a welcoming and stimulating environment
at Songdo. Mason Korea students spend their first and second year in Songdo,
third year in the United States, and the final year in Songdo. U.S. students are also
permitted to spend one or two semesters in Songdo.
The academic staff includes tenured, tenure-track, and term faculty members from
current Mason U.S. programs who rotate to teach and conduct research in Korea, and
qualified faculty in Korea with appropriate academic credentials. Mason Korea faculty
will benefit from new opportunities for teaching and research and will be eligible to
apply for new sources of research funding, form new collaborations with East Asian
partners in academe and business, work with high-achieving students, and begin or
expand their international portfolios.
For students as well as faculty, Mason Korea opens new possibilities for multilateral
academic research involving Mason and other Asian partners, expands Mason’s alumni
base in Asia, and opens the way to future opportunities in the region.
The Mason Korea campus further implements Mason’s longstanding strategic
emphasis on East Asia, establishing a visible presence for Mason in a prestigious East
Asian location and enhancing Mason’s reputation nationally and globally.
